Five people killed and eight injured in early morning accidents near toll plaza at Urse

Two fatal accidents were recorded on two consecutive mornings near the Urse toll plaza on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. Five people were killed and eight injured in the mishaps that happened yesterday and on Wednesday.


Both accidents were a result of cars speeding, said the police.




The driver, Dada Lokhande, escaped unhurt.

In the Wednesday accident, three people were killed and seven, including two children, were injured after the Qualis car they were in rammed into a stationary truck near the toll booth at 4.30 am.

All passengers of the car were residents of Mumbai and were on their way to Satara.

The deceased were identified as Rohan Gajanan Pawar (24), Rajesh Dilip Shelar (24) and driver Baban Manaji Surve (25).

The seriously injured were identified as Sujata Jayram Chikane (22), Pranav Jairam Chikane (5), Pramod Tukaram Dhanavade (12), Vivek Sagadev Ingalkar (20), Manmohan Jairam Chikane (10 months).

Two others, Ravi Chikane and Prakash Indulkar, sustained minor injuries.

The car had group of 13 that was on its way to Ganj in Jawali taluka of Satara district for a village pilgrimage.

"The Thursday morning accident seems to be driver error as the four-wheeler had rammed into the divider, while the earlier accident could be the outcome of inadequate reflectors on the rear side of trucks," Superintendent of Police (State Highway) Dilip Bhujbal said. "Strict instructions have been issued to our patrolling squads to not allow parking of trucks on roadsides except where spaces are allotted for parking. We will also take action against vehicles without proper reflectors."
