According to the police, Mani had borrowed Rs 15,000 from Jayamma, a flower vendor and small time moneylender. Mani was late in repaying the loan, and on December 7, Jayamma created scene in front of the petrol pump, abused and assaulted him in public.
Unable to bear the humiliation, he sought help from Yogananda offering him Rs 10,000 to eliminate Jayamma.
On January 17, Yogananda along with a few associates, barged into Jayamma's house when she was alone and strangled her to death.
The Byatarayanapura police investigating the case found out about the loan that Jayamma had given Mani and picked him up on suspicion. During questioning, Mani confessed to giving the contract to Yogananda.
On arresting Yogananda, the police recovered a gold chain, which he had taken after murdering Jayamma. "We have arrested Yogananda for murder and are on the look out for his associates, who are still at large," said Byatarayanapura Police Inspector D S Rajendra.
