In a surprising incident, on Friday in Delhi University, where the students' union polls are due in a few days, a 23-year-old boy was allegedly thrashed and beaten up by NSUI presidential candidate Ajay Chikara.

According to a police official, the 23-year-old was identified as Harish Chaudhary, who was the presidential candidate of NSUI last year. The incident took place on September 2, when the NSUI was planning for the campaigning process at the Faculty of Law, north campus.

"After the incident, the police reached the spot and Harish was immediately rushed to Hindu Rao Hospital. In the meantime, Ajay managed to escape from the spot, but search is on to nab him. Hopefully, he will be arrested by Monday," said a senior police official.

Shahnawaz Khan, national secretary, NSUI, said, "The incident took place during campaigning. However, those were some non-students who had entered into a scuffle. I am sure Ajay was not involved in the fight. He will contest for the office of president at the DUSU elections this time for sure."

Eyewitness Lalit Kumar, who is a DU student and was present during the campaigning process at the Faculty of Law, said, "I heard sounds of a fight breaking out while I was in the building. By the time I rushed to find out what was happening, I found a badly bruised Harish, and Ajay leaving the spot."

However, DU officials, who did not wish to be named, said, "Any incident of violence by any of the contesting persons can lead to disqualification of their candidature. Only the police can give the correct picture, as we have received no report."
