A 25-year-old man impersonating a police constable was caught in the act around 4 pm at Tilak Chowk, Sadashivpet, on Monday.
The accused has been identified as Suchit Manohar Rao Diwse (25), a resident of old Sanghvi.
While frisking Diwse, an on-duty constable found that the accused carried an identity card belonging to one Rakesh Rudrakar, a Nagpur police constable.
He had very tactfully replaced Rakesh's photo on the identity card in order to avoid any suspicion.
The youth was immediately arrested and remanded to police custody till Friday.
According to the police, the accused, who is a postgraduate in Arts, does not have any criminal record and has not kept any other fake identity cards with himself.
Asked what could have prompted him to make fake a police I-card, constable P R Narke said, "He has admitted is that he stole the I-card out of sheer curiosity."
The investigation is still on.
