Dies on way to YCM Hospital; family says cops put undue pressure on him

48-year-old suffers cardiac arrest during police interrogation

Aslam Shaikh (48), who was summoned by the officials of a police chowkie falling under Vishrantwadi police station’s jurisdiction for questioning in a case related to money lending, suffered a heart attack during interrogation and breathed his last while he was being rushed to the YCM Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Shaikh’s family, however, accused the police officials of pressurising him during interrogation following which he suffered the heart attack that claimed his life. The police officials said that Shaikh and his son were summoned at the Charholi police chowkie at 12.30 pm yesterday. They said that action was initiated after a person named Subhash Gavai lodged a complaint against him. Gavai in his complaint had said that Shaikh had been pestering him for money that he had borrowed from him.

“A few months ago Shaikh had given Rs 40,000 to Gavai via a self help group and had recently started pestering him for money. This irked Gavai and he approached the police chowkie, and filed a written complaint against Shaikh,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Sanjay Jadhav said. “Shaikh and his son Abdul had come to the police chowkie on Monday, accompanied by a few members of self help group, where he was being questioned by the police officials. As he was being questioned, he started feeling uneasy and complained of chest pain. He was immediately rushed to the YCM hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.”

Prima facie it appeared that Shaikh died of a heart attack.u00a0“As Shaikh had suffered heart attack in the police chowkie, the case has been handed over to the CID for a fair investigation,” Jadhav said.PSI Sachin Kale of Vishrantwadi police station said that Shaikh, a resident of Charholi, had high blood pressure.u00a0
