A tempo driver claimed the life of an eight-year-old at Dharavi on Saturday, making it the third accident at the same spot.
The incident occurred at 8.30 pm on Saturday when Shivakiran Varma (42), the driver of the tempo ran over Sarfaraz Khan near Arpha Hotel, Dharavi. The boy was running near the footpath when the vehicle sped out of control and knocked him down.

The boy died on the spot and an enraged mob of locals nabbed Varma and handed him over to the police. A Shahu Nagar police official said, “We arrested Varma under Sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grie
vous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.”
However, the 42-year-old driver, who was produced at Bandra court yesterday, was released on bail, much to the furore of Khan’s family. “The court must hang him for the death of my grandson. How could the court release him (Varma) in less than 24 hours? Now, he is free to kill another kid,” said Khan’s grandmother.
An eyewitness said that this was the third time this year that a car had run over a person at the same spot. The locals also said that there was an urgent need to build a bridge to prevent further accidents. Vakil Ahmad, the Congress corporator from Mahim, said, “Just a few days ago during a meeting with MHADA officials we decided to build a footover bridge and work will soon start.”u00a0
