The bustling metropolis of Mumbai, which has 57,41,632 females - as per the 2011 Census figures and scores of female visitors - has just 836 public toilets reserved exclusively for them in the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) earmarked funds worth Rs 75 lakh for the current financial year to undertake construction of more toilets for women. And the civic body is now on the lookout for suitable locations to construct them.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan gave the information through a written reply in the state assembly recently. The 836 toilets were meant for the floating population of women. Besides, the BMC has constructed 10,900 public toilets under the clean locality drive in various parts of the city. Out of these, 50% are available for women with separate entrances, says the reply given to a question raised by Congress members Rajhans Singh, Kalidas Kolambar, Amin Patel and 16 other members from NCP, BJP and Samajwadi Party.
These public toilets, constructed using the local area development funds allotted to MPs, MLAs and MLCs, are not all reserved for women men may also use them, said the chief minister in the reply based on the information provided by the BMC’s urban development (UD) department which he heads and which looks after such civic affairs.
The question was asked about an instruction given by the mayor to the additional municipal commissioner (engineering) in December 2012, to look into the issue of constructing more toilets for women on an immediate basis. The UD department failed to submit any proposal even after three months, the MLAs contended. The CM accepted that the fact that no proposal had been submitted.
