Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials conducted simultaneous raids at four octroi nakas ufffd Mulund, Dahisar, Vashi and Sewree ufffd in the city yesterday.
31 vehicles were seized, subsequently four godowns were raided and 10 octroi officials were detained for questioning in the surprise raid that started at 5 am. ACB officials informed that as part of an on-going probe, they had been working on information about a widespread octroi evasion racket that was being carried between octroi officials and transporters for the last 15 days.

“Octroi agents had declared their cargo to be five times lesser than that of the actual weight, while others were carrying bogus paperwork. Some consignments were declared as scrap to invoke minimal duty. In reality, these trucks were carrying cloth and steel, two commodities that are liable for the maximum octroi duty,” said an ACB official, on condition of anonymity.
“While the raids were ongoing, we got to know about three godowns in Kalbadevi and one in Byculla owned by the transporters and dispatched personnel there. Cargo ferried by the transporters is stored there, and we are examining the octroi related paperwork for these goods,” the officer said. Senior ACB officials said that ten officials posted at the octroi nakas have been detained for questioning and no arrests have been made yet. u00a0
