Premier medical institute introduces e-book facility

It may be sixty nine years old, but All India Institute of Medical Sciences doesn't believe in living in the past; at least not for too long. The country's finest health institute has finally started an e-book facility for resident doctors and students, accessible through Wi-Fi. The issue was being discussed since last year.u00a0u00a0

Apparently for some time, students and residents doctors at the institute were unable to access any medical portals, which was affecting their work and studies drastically. Suggestions were submitted last year in September, which were approved in December, but the e-book facility was ushered in only this month. Naturally all the students are happy.

"We have finally got an e-book facility. We have given the list of journals and e-book to the administration. The list was submitted in May 2010, and at last we got a few e-books for us," said Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, president, Resident Doctors Association (RDA), AIIMS.

Students also feel that while the other foreign universities have access to all essential portals through which they can access medical information, AIIMS still lacks important portals like ATHENS. "With our initiative, a lot of e-books and journals are now added to the AIIMS subscriptions, which can be accessed in the institute library through AIIMS Wi-Fi. But still accessibility to portals is inadequate," added Dr Karmakar.

Rahul's visit
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday met a 14-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh, undergoing treatment at AIIMS after being stabbed in the eye by two young men who tried to rape her. Rahul went to the Rajendra Prasad Eye Centre at the AIIMS at 10.45 am and spoke to the girl and her parents, sources said.
