Two cupboards broken, but the cash box was safe; cops suspect an insider's hand

A watchman at the Archeological Survey of India (ASI), Santosh Savale (39), was found murdered inside the premises yesterday morning.

Incidentally, Savale's personal cash of Rs 3,300 was missing on Friday, and before he could react to the robbery, he was found dead.

He was found murdered at the Nagarkhana Darwaja in Shanivarwada and police suspect that the primary motive behind the murder was to steal the cashbox kept inside the ticket counter room.

However, the police did not rule out the role of construction labourers appointed at Shaniwarwada.

The murder came to light when Bhikoba Adhav, Nagara artist came to the fortress at 6 am and was shocked to see the Dilli Darwaja (Delhi gate) open and stumbled upon Savale lying in a pool of blood with wounds on his stomach, neck and hands.

Foul play
Adhav informed Vishram-bagwada police and they found two cupboards inside the Ticket Counter room broken and the cash box containing nearly Rs 54,000 close by.

DCP Dnyeshawar Phadatare said, "The miscreants tried to break open the cash box but were unsuccessful." When police opened the cash box all the cash was safe inside.

Senior PI Motichand Rathore of Vishrambagwada police station said, "We have interrogated all five day watchmen and workers and interrogated four criminals on record but there is no substantial information so far."
