About a year after ACP Rajbir's murder, wife set to become a cop

He was a high-profile, trigger-happy cop, feared by criminals and revered by his colleagues as much for his commitment to the job as for the alleged wealth he had amassed.

But when Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rajbir Singh was gunned down allegedly by a property dealer in March last year, his family had to face severe financial crunch. The police department too seemed to have sidelined its blue-eyed boy.

However, after a year of troubles, his widow Narmada Singh is all set to join the Delhi Police as a sub-inspector.

MiD DAY had first reported on August 12, 2008 that Narmada Singh had applied for the post of sub-inspector in the Delhi Police.

According to sources in the force, her application has recently been approved. She will be inducted into the force after being trained at the Police Training Centre.

"I have not yet been informed about the approval of my job application. The last time I asked senior police officials, they said I would get the job very soon," Narmada said in a telephonic conversation with MiD DAY.

Narmada is a BTech degree holder from Kurukshetra University and police officials say she fits the job profile.

As a sub-inspector, she will draw a decent salary that will help her family," said a senior police official, wishing anonymity.

Penury and prejudice

ACP Rajbir Singh was gunned down allegedly by a property dealer on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road on March 25, 2008.

The family of the encounter specialist was left grappling with financial problems and forced by circumstances, Narmada decided to apply for a job.

According to police sources, Rajbir had amassed property worth crores but had kept it all in his relatives' names. After his death, his family approached the relatives but was not entertained.
