Accident victims get a safety net

There's no need to panic the next time you hear that someone you know has met with an accident. Janawani, an NGO, the Pune police and Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) have came together with Indictrans Technologies to develop an online portal to help frantic relatives know the state of the victims. Called Accident Reporting System, the portal was launched by police commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh yesterday.

Detailed info
Techies Swapnil Hajare, Kanahaiya Kale, Kevin Gomes and Vijay Patil worked on the portal for four months. It will have details of the accident, including the location, names of victims, vehicles involved and the name of the police station where the report has been filed. Accidents are also classified into nineteen categories u00c3u00a2u00c2u0080u00c2u0093 including type of vehicle, cause, age of victim u00c3u00a2u00c2u0080u00c2u0093 for easy access of information.

Easy to locate
Explaining the reason why they have used Geographic Information System (GIS) for their portal, Hajare, the co-founder of Indictrans, said, "GIS helped us to provide information on the locations of police stations and important landmarks. The unique feature is that every spot can be traced on its latitudinal and longitudinal basis." Patil, who is also the product manager, said that the software submits information on traffic offenses to the control room.

DCP Manoj Patil (Traffic) told MiD DAY "Collecting statistics on traffic accidents is a time consuming process. This software will make this process easy."
