Airport Director Deepak Shashtriu00a0said, "We have been following up with airline companies for quite some time and now it's been confirmed. Though they are connecting flights and not direct ones, still we will be able to attract a good crowd."

He said the flights would cater to pilgrims who visit Shirdi, IT professionals and students. "Any airline that will come here will look for business and flights to these cities will generate revenue," he said.

Shashtri said besides domestic flights, talks were on to include international flights also.

"We are waiting to sign the formal documents, but we are already in talks with Singapore, Sri Lanka and Sharjah to start their airlines. As it's a long and tedious process, it might take some time. We have already met the officials and things are looking up. If discussions are successful, then the airlines will start from December," Shashtri said.

The flights to Patna, Leh and Kochi have come as good news for residents in these cities.

Chanchal Pandey, assistant sales officer, and resident of Patna who works in the city said it would definitely make travelling easy. "It's takes 36 hours from Pune to Patna by train. I had to spend almost four days travelling to and fro and end up getting just a couple of days to stay at home. It was hectic and now it's going to be easy."
