Almost useless?

Experts say that instead of taking the Metro from Baiyappanahalli to M G Road, people would much rather travel by road because of the accessibility

The much-awaited Metro rail work is nearing completion and will chug off anytime soon. However, experts feel that the 7.5 km stretch between Baiyappanahalli to M G Road will not be of much use.

The part of first phase of Metro rail project between these two roads is likely to be completed this month. This particular stretch was supposed to be completed a long time ago, and kept getting postponed. Experts feel that this stretch will not help the public muchu00a0-- people would rather travel by road than by the Metro.

"The road from Baiyappanahalli to MG Road is quite good and accessible. Very few people travel between these points every day. If it would have been from Majestic or Rajajinagar then the results would have been different," says Prof M N Sreehari, advisor to the Karnataka Government on Traffic, Transportation and Infrastructure.

"When something big is done people should benefit from it. In the beginning it is likely to run in full capacity because people would be curious to take a ride in the Metro," he added.

However BMRCL PRO Yashwant Chavan says, "There are people who travel between these two points.

Normally, people travel between 8-10 km to their work places. We have to start somewhere. We will extend the route step-by-step."

80 kmph Maximum speed at which Metro trains will run

10.20 lakh No of passengers expected to travel by Metro everyday in 2011
