The second such incident at the hospital in recent times happened at 11.30 am in spite of the decision to keep two police guards as escorts for jail inmates instead of just one. Lakhan had been arrested in a cheating case on August 19 and remanded in magisterial custody. According to the police, Lakhan had cheated several women using the ruse of sanctioning loans for them. MiD DAY had reported how the proposal to create a separate prison ward at Sassoon, a move that would prevent such escapes, had not progressed beyond the discussions stage. Recently, top police officials had met authorities at Sassoon, asking them to build a separate prison ward. Lakhan had complained of having tuberculosis and had been admitted to Sassoon hospital. He had been undergoing treatment in Ward No 27 since October 12. Four guards were appointed to work in two shifts to keep an eye on Lakhan.
Constable Ashok Jadhav gave a complaint regarding the incident and Sub-Inspector Ashok Randive is investigating the case. The latest incident comes close on the heels of the escape engineered by Nayana Pujari rape and murder case prime accused Yogesh Raut, who had been admitted to Ward No 27. Raut, who had also asked to use the toilet and given his police escort the slip, is still at large. After Raut made good his escape, the police headquarters had decided that all inmates would be escorted by two guards in future.
