A reputed army school based in the city has come under fire for contempt of court in a case related to charging exorbitant school fees.

Following a petition by Parachute Regiment School Parents Association contending that the school was charging heavy fees in violation of a single judge order passed in January, the High Court has issued notices to the Chairman of Parachute Regiment School Colonel Adappa and three others.

Justice H N Nagamohan Das had quashed the state government's amendment order, which had excluded schools affiliated to the CBSE or the ICSE from the Karnataka Education Act, 1983, and brought it within the purview of the state government fee regulations structure.

With this ruling, CBSE and ICSE schools were prevented from charging exorbitantly.

The single judge had passed the order on a batch of petitions challenging the state government's notification in view of an increase in fees by 130 per cent by several schools.

Quashing the April 4, 1998 amendment, which prevented the state government from regulating the fee structure of CBSE and ICSE schools, Das held that the hike in fees was not supported either by the Central or the Karnataka Education Act.

The High Court has posted the hearing to next week to hear the school management's version.
