BHU vice-chancellor says he's committed to upgrade of facilities at SSL hospital

Reminiscing about his days as a student at the Banaras Hindu University, Dr Lalji Singh who now serves as the Vice Chancellor of the BHU spoke about his vision for the masses. Addressing the media at the Central Registry of the BHU, Dr Singh conveyed the highlights of the BHU and discussed the Student's Council Election too.

"It is a great opportunity to serve the university that you studied in, as a Vice Chancellor. We have conducted elections after one and a half decades, successfully and peacefully.u00a0 This will be an example to other universities of our country," explained Dr Singh.

He further reiterated his commitment for the upliftment of facilities of SSL hospital. "I have visited the Trauma Centre on October 29 to review and expedite the work.u00a0 The Trauma Centre will also have a helipad and helicopter services to meet the demand of emergency patients.

This air ambulance will be available at the premises of Trauma Centre. BHU will improve its facilities to obtain AIIMS status for SSL Hospital," he added.

Further, he pointed out that the important development in the hospital, is in the field of DNA based therapy and diagnostic services. "The future hospital will be DNA based and emphasis will be to promote predictive and preventive medicine.u00a0

The diseases should be targeted to be controlled by predictive and preventive medicine based on DNA Technology rather that going for cure after occurrence of the disease," said Dr Singh.

He added that yoga and gym facilities will be provided as post treatment for patients and expressed his intention to open the paid and evening OPD in the hospital once again.

Transparent system
Explaining that transparency is crucial in every field, he said that he wishes to have a very transparent system of examination, academics, research and administration. "I expect every body to be frank and bold in pointing out any lapses in the administration. I like my critics more than a 'yes man'," he said.

Dr Singh now wishes to develop international facilities like Centralized Cafeteria which can cater to about 5,000 students.

"It should also have provisions for teachers to have their club near such a cafeteria. Through this, the multidisciplinary scientific interaction may take place among the students and between teacher and students," he explained.

He also wished to have world class centralized instrumentation facilities and spoke about his dream project of translational research. "All these facilities will improve the scientific environment and bring about outputs of international standards. It will further attract international faculty," he asserted.

Citing former president and visionary, APJ Abdul Kalam, Dr Singh said that he came to BHU with a dream.
He advised that one should always aim high and strive to achieve that. The Registrar, Dean of Students and Chief Proctor were also present at the press conference.
