Salon owners in the city, Baba Ramdev might be dialling your number soon. The yoga guru wants salons to use aloe vera gel instead of shaving creams made by MNCs. This, he says, will save the country Rs 25,000 crore.
The local group Bharat Swabhiman Trust (SBT) initiated by Baba Ramdev is working hard to promote the idea of aloe vera gel instead of shaving cream for the male population in the city. SBT spokesman Suresh Jadhav said, "Aloe vera gel will become popular in salons and with barbers. We do not want the barbers to reduce rates and incur losses. But we also do not want them to hike the rates."
Baba even has a microbiologist on his side to promote his idea. Dr Ashish Polkade, a microbiologist and a disciple of Ramdev, said, "Aloe vera gel is anti-fungal, anti-septic and anti-inflammatory. The skin absorbs it instantly and keeps the moisture for a long time."
"We came up with the estimate of Rs 25,000 crore by calculating the 120 crore population of the country, of which 45 per cent are grown up men," Jadhav said. Ramdev's organisation plans to distribute these plants free of cost. Jadhav said, "Aloe vera plant is a zero-budget investment and it can be grown anywhere."
Rajendra Dalvi, secretary, Maharashtra Barber Association, said, "We have heard about aloe vera gel that can be used for shaving. The association is ready to give it a thought. At present we charge Rs 20 per shave. We can offer our customers a choice if they want to use the aloe vera gel."
Dr Amol Saptarshi, an Ayurvedic doctor, said, "Aloe vera has multiple uses. I was not aware that the gel could be used as a shaving cream too. But my friends tried it out and they are satisfied with the results," he said.
