For quick access to their service records, general administration department is creating online profiles of 1.10 lakh gazetted officers; first use will be made during state-wide routine transfers later this month
The information revolution that has made giant strides across the spectrum has so far had to tread softly in the corridors of power and bureaucracy. Now, the state’s general administration department (GAD) has seemingly plucked up, as it is in the process of putting service track records and biodata of babus online, to ensure easy access for their bosses with regard to postings, transfers and promotions. Accordingly, the GAD led by Chief Minister Prithiviraj Chavan has decided to create online profiles of 1.10 lakh gazetted officers and first use of this will be made during state-wide routine transfers due this month.

GAD’s gift
This is going to help the higher-ups at Mantralaya in a big way as the age-old procedure of summoning details of any bureaucrat related to his track record, previous postings and biodata from his parent office would take up considerable time, even a few months in some cases, said a senior government official.
Earlier, the administration would find it tricky to ascertain whether a bureaucrat was fit for a certain job, or if he was yearning for a particular posting, he added. With the introduction of the new system, it will require no more than a few minutes for the top brass to pick a particular officer, as his biodata, photograph, personal details and service record will collectively speak for itself, said the official. To make this trouble-free, the department has created employee profile pages where such details will be available for government use.
Plain and simple
A profile contains besides a photograph and personal details qualifications, office posting minutiae, tenure and record for the last 10 years with responsibilities handled by the bureaucrat. The past history will also reveal if the officer concerned had ever faced any inquiry, suspension or court cases, the official revealed. Most importantly, the profile will include particulars of important training programmes attended by the officer, along with his contributions towards any state government publication, committee, and other achievements in the previous 10 years of his service.
Such a process will preclude future embarrassment for the government, since in the past the appointment of a bureaucrat would be followed by criticism from officilas soon after his posting. The GAD has undertaken the task with the help of the information technology department.
