Last day of admittance through third cut-off list affected, aspirants demand extension

It was a day of disappointments for aspiring students at the Delhi University. Monday was the last day of admissions under the third cut-off list, with the fourth list out later in the day. But as a result of the bandh called by the opposition political parties, reaching the varsity became a tall order and many had to turn back disheartened. Now several aspirants are demanding an extension for the process to be continued under the third list itself.

Manish Kumar was one such victim of the bandh, who missed the last date of admission. Manish had to reach Zakir Hussain College from Kalkaji and keeping the bandh in mind, he left at around 8 in the morning. But soon he realised that his calculations were all wrong.

"I kept waiting for an auto rickshaw but could not find one. Those that were standing were not ready to go. I waited for half an hour and then decided to catch a bus. After waiting for another half an hour, I got a DTC bus. Hardly had the bus covered two to three kilometres that protesters halted it and offloaded all the passengers. Finally, I missed the date."

Kumar was not the only student who faced such a situation. Rashmi Singh, travelling from Preet Vihar to North Campus, managed to reach the college, but not in time. "By the time I reached, it was too late. I was asked to come and take admission after the fourth cut-off list is out."
On account of the nationwide bandh called by the BJP and Left parties in protest against the fuel price hike, most of the colleges witnessed low turnouts. Those who managed to reach the colleges were the ones who had their own vehicle or lived nearby.

Students faced a similar situation in the South Campus as well. Dr P Hemalatha Reddy, Principal of Sri Venkateshwara College said: "Seats in most of the courses have already been filled up. So on the last day of the third cut-off list, we weren't expecting many students. But the turnout was even less than our expectations."

Meanwhile Manoj Chaudhary, Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president demanded an extension of admission dates by a day. "I think DU must take into consideration the students who have missed the deadline due to the bandh. Though the fourth list has come out, there should also be an extension in the admission dates for the third cut-off list."

NUMBER FOUR

Delhi University has come out with the fourth cut-off list for admission to the various undergraduate courses. Sri Venkateswara College, Acharya Narendra Dev College, Hindu College, Kirori Mal College and Ramjas College were among the first to declare the fourth cut-off list on Monday. Admissions to the popular courses like B.Com (Hons) and Economics (Hons) have been closed in almost all colleges. Though there will be no further cut-off lists, still hope persists for those who miss the fourth cut-off list by a narrow margin. Some colleges will advertise fresh admissions and cut-offs on their notice boards for admission to a few programs depending upon the availability of seats. All eligible candidates are required to complete their admission formalities in the concerned colleges between July 11 and 13.
