The condition of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, who is suffering from acute pneumonia, "marginally improved" today, a close aide of his said quoting doctors.

"Basu's condition has not worsened, but has improved slightly. His falling blood pressure has recorded a small rise while there has been a minor increase in urination," the veteran CPI (M) leader's personal assistant Jaykrishna Ghosh told PTI.

95-year-old Basu, who has been in a critical condition since yesterday morning, is still on ventilator at the private hospital AMRI in Salt Lake.

"The eight-member medical board formed for Basu will soon review his condition and a bulletin is expected thereafter," he said. Basu was admitted to the hospital with acute pneumonia on Friday.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in and around the hospital in view of the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, its Politburo member Sitaram Yechuri and CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan are also expected to visit the hospital later today.

Prayer meetings were being held in different parts of the state for the well-being of the former chief minister.
