Software on mobile phone helps senior officers know if constables leave assigned spot

Traffic police constables who post themselves at spots where they find more offenders instead of their designated location to make a little bit for themselves on the side better be more careful in future. The reason is senior officers are now able to track them through the Trafficop software installed in their Blackberry mobiles.
Trafficop was introduced in November 2009 and global positioning system (GPS) was incorporated into it so that the location of the constables could be tracked. The handsets that are used by constables to fine offenders help the officers in knowing if the constables have changed their positions.

Warnings issued
Many such officers and constables have been issued stern warnings by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manoj Patil after the software tracked policemen deployed all over the city. No action has been taken yet, but the DCP promises to suspend such officials if they are found next time.

The software will help curb malpractices and also enhance the efficiency of traffic police officers, said Patil.
"Huge number of complaints were received about traffic policemen straying away from their designated point and deliberately taking action at some specific points," said Patil. "Some favourite spots of such officers were also identified easily after Trafficop's launch."

Patil explained that not many officers are aware about their movements being tracked by seniors, which has helped them to easily identify the errant officials.

Tech that
The physical location of any traffic officer is visible only to the senior officials. Also, with the help of Trafficop, the average number of offences registered at various locations by each police officer in his duty hours is visible. If a sudden drop or a surge is noticed in the number of challans issued at any given location, it indicates that malpractices are probably going on.

More than a lakh offences have been registered since November 2009. It helps to keep an update about not just the number but also the type of offences that are registered everyday. Trafficop had recently got a green signal from the state Home Minister R R Patil who has assured to implement it statewide.
