There is good news for those who prefer travelling by trains for their outstation journey, as they'll find cleaner coaches the next time they board a train from Pune railway station.

A train leaves the Pune railway station

The Central Railway's Pune Division is spending Rs 12 crore to start two more cleaning sheds, or pits, near Ghorpadi. The new pits will take the load off the existing facilities that are equipped to clean only 10-12 coach trains.

A railway official said that as the new trains are 25-coach long, they couldn't be accommodated in the old pits.

"Under the existing conditions, the extra coaches had to be separated and shifted to a new pit or had to be parked on a different track. Called as shunting, the procedure required a lot of time and manpower.

Also, the other passing trains had to be stopped until the coaches were shifted, thereby causing delay in the train movement," he said.

Another official pointed out the potential safety hazards during shunting operations. "Changing coaches at major stations puts other trains at risk, as trains are leave and enter the station every minute.

Besides, as Pune is the largest railway station in the Pune Division of Central Railway, new trains are being introduced to the station every year," he said.

YK Singh, PRO of Pune Division of CR, confirmed the development and assured that both sheds will be completed by next year. "While one shed - which is under construction - will be completed by March, the other will be ready by July.
