The letter said that the governor had indicated to Yeddyurappa, that he would accord a sanction to prosecute him after January 26, based on a request made by two lawyers.

He had asked the chief secretary for some documents regarding the issue on January 3, while the opposition parties were rejoicing over a possibility of prosecution. "This prompted the cabinet to take a decision to write the letter," said a source.

Insiders in the BJP said that the move was to make the party's intention clear that it would take the governor head on if he goes ahead with the sanction. The cabinet also reportedly discussed about political options such as calling a state bandh.

"It has become a political game. While Congress wants to use this as a weapon, we should also look for some defense," said K S Eswarappa, state BJP president.

A Congress source said the issue was losing steam, since the high command is not enthusiastic, and the lawyers who had asked for the sanction have softened.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, in-charge of Congress affairs in Karnataka, is expected to land in Bangalore, but party sources said his visit had nothing to do with the current political development.
