Just because it says 'Call Of Duty' on the box doesn't mean the makers of this successful franchise stay the same. The team behind the Modern Warfare games has split up and this sequel is, unfortunately, by the guys behind 'Call Of Duty 3' and World At War (you know, the ones that weren't quite as good as the others).

Thankfully though, this is at least as good as Modern Warfare 2 in terms of the story mode, with a new Cold War-inspired plot. From trying to assassinate Fidel Castro to sequences based on films like Hamburger Hill and Apocalypse Now, this has some of the most cinematic set pieces in all of gaming. The level where you're driving down a river in a patrol boat, with Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones booming out of the boat's speakers, is going to go down as a classic. As is the bit where you get to pilot a Russian Hind attack helicopter.

Maybe there's not as much variety in the single player as the very best of Call Of Duty 4 (there's hardly any real stealth, for example) but it comes pretty close. There's also no killing civilians this time, or anything really controversial except for a fairly brief torture sequence.

There is the multiplayer mode that works just like Modern Warfare though, but with new wager matches (for in-game credits, not real money) and lots more customisation tools. The only real cooperative option though is the return of Zombies mode from World At War, with a special level where you can play as John F Kennedy, Nixon, and Castro as you fight the undead.

Fans will argue that it's not the absolute best Call Of Duty, but it definitely comes close.
