On October 20, the police got a call of murder from the area. Cops reached the house of the deceased, Sheetal, and found the front door locked from inside. They found the deceased lying on the floor in a pool of blood and her face was covered with a blood-soaked sheet. There were cut marks on her cheek and her neck was slit open with some sharp-edged weapon.
"There were no witnesses to the incident. Police lodged an FIR under section 302 (murder)," said a police official. A manhunt was launched for Ashwani, who was missing. He was nabbed from Satya Niketan area of south Delhi.
Love affair
Police said the deceased, Sheetal, had a love marriage with the accused. Their marriage was solemnised at Kali Bari Mandir in Gole Market area nearly two years ago. After a year, Ashwani started beating Sheetal over petty issues. The accused, in the meantime, came in contact with a girl and got married to her too. He then decided to disown Sheetal and started living separately with his new wife, Neha, in Shakti Vihar area, with a fake name, Shiv Kumar.
The murder
On October 20, the accused came to meet his wife and had an argument with her. In the night, he asked Neha to leave the house with his two-year-old son, Gaurav, and meet him near Meetha Pur Chowk. Ashwani strangulated Sheetal with a piece of nylon rope and thereafter slit her throat with a knife. After committing the crime, he closed the door and fled. "The accused has confessed his crime. The police also have recovered the weapons used in the crime," said the police official.
