Bhagat 'joke' backfired, but he tried to take on the trolls head on by blaming the foreign media for 'loving poor backward Indians' stories.
In case it was not blatantly obvious that historian tweet was a joke. Made a million of them on writers and engineers before. Duh!

Tch tch. A few tweets of mine and the tolerants get so intolerant on me. Cute.

Unhappy with all the unwanted attention, but wanting to have the last word, he signed off with another jibe.
In India, you can't kill cows. And you cannot even make a joke on holy cows. Like historians. Sorry if any animals or sentiments were hurt.

This is not the first time the author, who also is a columnist, social critic and a dance show judge, been trolled for a controversial comment on Twitter.
Chetan had recently come up with a tweet about writers returning their Sahitya Akademi awards. "Ok so am I also supposed to return my Sahitya Academy award? Oh wait. Haven't got it yet, he tweeted.
This got him a gem of a reply from Sandeep Panikkal, "@chetan_bhagat If you get a Sahitya Academy award I will return my ration card in protest," Panikkal tweeted.
