The Nandini Layout police yesterday arrested Deepak Mishra, a 33-year-old tailor from Uttar Pradesh on charges of drugging and robbing passengers in trains for the last 11 years. Mishra was arrested as he tried to sell some ornaments to a jeweller in Nandini Layout. Deepak Mishra alias Ajay Saxena alias Mohammed Azmuddin, who used to design churidars came to Bangalore to secure a suitable job but took to stealing in 1999 instead. He is believed to have stolen Rs 5 lakh in cash and ornaments since then.

Mishra would get rich passengers to eat food laced with Activa-2 sleeping tablets bought from a chemist he had befriended. He would zero in on wealthy-looking victims and stand behind them at the ticket-booking counter at the city railway station. By the time the victim would wake up, Mishra would have disappeared with all his cash, and valuables on person of the passenger.

Mishra successfully stole from passengers in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for many years before he was caught on Thursday at Nandini Layout.

Sub-Inspector Anjanappa S, the investigating officer in the case, "We caught him after a tip-off that he would be at the jewel shop. We have recovered cash and valuables worth Rs 5 lakh from him. We expect it to cross 10 lakh soon. The Tamil Nadu police have also sought his custody to probe his involvement in similar cases in the state."
