The BOSCO child helpline identified one child from each of its nine centres based on the child's performance in education, discipline, cleanliness and respect shown to elders.
"Such awards are helpful in motivating other children to strive for such recognition as the helpline can't force them to get into school or learn etiquette. Any child who volunteers to join the school run by the helpline is helped to make a career and lead a dignified life," said Fr George PS, the NGO's executive director.
Cops too awarded
The NGO also awarded 'Makkala Mitra Awards' to railway and police officials and some members of the general public who have played a role in guiding street children and making them strive for a better life.
The awards were presented as part of the Children's Day celebrations organised for nearly 400 underprivileged children at St Teresa's School.
The event also saw a number of BOSCO well-wishers and sponsors showing their support for the NGO's cause and ended with friendship bands being tied on dignitaries' hands by the children.
