Au00a0report compiled by the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) has thrown up disturbing statistics.
Narcotics sales and consumption has doubled in the city compared to last year and the demand for cannabis is increasing among all age groups, the report said.
Inter-state racket
The ANC has also established links between peddlers in the city and syndicates operating from outside the state.
Police Inspector (ANC) Satish Devare said: "We have established certain links and trends after interrogating the peddlers. Cannabis is mostly sourced from states such as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, while brown sugar has been traced to Thane, Bhiwandi and Ambernath.
We have already arrested 98 people in connection with 57 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act this year till August, while in entire 2009 only 58 cases were registered and 97 arrested.
"Of the total cases this year 50 per cent are of consumption and others related to sales. Although the figures have doubled, it can be attributed to the ANC's performance. They conducted more raids this year.
"Of the 57 cases this year, cannabis was seized in 48 cases, while brown sugar worth Rs 16 lakh was seized. Last year, 33 cases of cannabis trade were registered, and cocaine was seized in a single case.
"Besides cannabis and brown sugar, opium has been seized in large quantities. In two cases, 5.7 kilograms of opium worth Rs 7.60 lakh was seized," Devare said.
