Not informed
However, what's amusing is the fact that no one bothered to inform the fire brigade about the incident. It was only after journalists rang the fire brigade yesterday afternoon to find out the location of the place, that fire personnel came to know about it.

As a result, the fire brigade and emergency services reached the spot only after a good 12 hours. Venkatesh, a construction worker who was injured in the accident, said, "The roof caved in as it couldn't bear the weight of the Ready Mix Concrete Machine. We were 11 people working on the roof when it collapsed."

Rules flouted
Senior Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials visited the site yesterday afternoon and stopped the work. Besides, they lodged a complaint with the police. "About two months ago, we had inspected the site and had asked them to stop the work because they had not taken the necessary license from the BBMP," said Town Planning Committee Chairman M Nagaraj.

Speaking to MiD DAY, local corporator Nandini Srinivas said, "Use of substandard material is the main reason behind the mishap. Besides, the columns and beams are very weak." She added that despite the builder being asked to stop the work, they went ahead with the construction. The builder had to Rs 40 lakh as license fee to BBMP, which is still pending. Despite repeated attempts, officials of the construction company remained unavailable for comment.

Sinking feeling
A couple with a 3 BHK apartment booking in the building said, "People from the builders' office had called us today to take possession of our flat. I took my wife along to complete the formalities. However, I'm shocked to see the clubhouse has collapsed. Besides, people here claim that the entire building has been made using substandard material."

Truck crushes sleeping youth
In another accident at Byappanahalli Metro station, 19 year-old Vikas Mandal was killed by a Ready Mix Concrete Truck around 2 am on Monday.u00a0Mandal was sleeping on the platform when the incident took place.

Construction work was going on at that point and the driver of the truck reversed the vehicle, crushing Mandal's head, killing him instantly.u00a0 Indiranagar Traffic Inspector Rajendra said, "The driver, Shankar, has been arrested. He hails from Tamil Nadu while the deceased was from West Bengal."
