Befriended and drugged, elderly woman wakes up to find her gold ornaments gone

Au00a0gang of chain-snatchers caught after a motorcycle chase by alert citizens and the police in JP Nagar this week may have been good news for the city, but there were others on the prowl for gold who succeeded.

A 65-year-old woman was relieved of her gold ornaments worth Rs 45,000 by two women after they offered her sedative-laced betel leaves. Channamma, a flower vendor from the city market, became the con women's victim when she was returning home on Monday. As she crossed the road, the two women, who appeared to be about 30 years and 60 years of age, approached her and offered to help her across.

They made small talk, asking her where she was from. When Channamma replied that she was from Kamala Nagar, the duo said they were also from that area and tried to befriend her.

They offered her betel leaves and Channamma accepted, but she fell unconscious soon after she began chewing on the leaves.

When she came to, she found herself on the steps of the Channakeshava temple in Ulsoorgate with her gold chain, a pair of earrings and a gold ring missing.
