Burdwan (WB): A pair of conjoined twins were separated today by doctors in a rare surgery which was carried out at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (BMCH) here.

"This is the first time (in West Bengal) that two boys who shared a common chest and abdominal walls were separated by surgery in a hospital outside Kolkata," BMCH Superintendent Dr Utpal Dawn told journalists.

A 10-member medical team led by Dr Naren Mukherjee performed the intricate operation which lasted five hours, he said, adding that the boys were doing fine Dawn said the doctors have been able to achieve this feat with their limited resources.

"This achievement will boost the people's opinion about government hospitals. The mother, who has an eight-year-old boy, is very happy after the successful operation," he said. The conjoined twins were delivered in a caesarean procedure to one Kafura Begum at a local hospital last year.

Begum is a resident of Batan Garia village in Gurap of nearby Hooghly district. The operation to separate the twins could not be carried out at the time of their delivery for lack of infrastructure there, said Kafura's farm-labourer husband Ishtar Sheikh.
