Pune's Anti Extortion Cellu00a0 has arrested 33-year-old Ravi Bhupendranath Verma, a resident of Navi Mumbai, on charges of robbery and molestation. Verma, was externed from Navi Mumbai in June 2009, and had 11 cases against him in Mumbai and Pune. A team headed by DCP Anil Kumbhare with ACP Sangram Singh Nishandar and PI Kishore Jhadav traced Verma, and nabbed him at Babbi da dhaba on the old Pune Mumbai highway.
Verma's modus operandi was simple. He kept a list of wives of high profile men in Pune and Mumbai and made calls on their landlines between 6 and 8.45 pm. He posed as a CID official, and would call and threaten housewives saying their husband was kidnapped and would be released at a ransom. Theu00a0 women would be called to isolated spots and molested, robbed of their cash and mobiles.
The accused was arrested yesterday, after a complaint registered in the city on February 20. He got caught after the husband of a woman (name withheld) who Verma had threatened, called her minutes later only to be told that he was safe and in office. Verma will remain in custody for two days. The police seized a Maruti Zen and Rs 1 lakh from him.u00a0 "We suspect the accused used the same modus operandi on other women. More people could be involved with Verma and we hope to nail them," said DCP Anil Kumbhare (Crime Branch).
"We suspect the involvement of one more person, and we hope to nail him soon."
