32-year-old former sepoy held for stealing gold ornaments from women commuters in long-distance trains

At a time when gold prices have soared to Rs 19,000 per 10 grams, the railway police arrested a former sepoy with the Southern Command with 400 grams of stolen ornaments. Jewellery worth Rs 7.6 lakh was recovered from him.
Vinayak alias Vinod Dattatraya Wankhede (32) was arrested a few days ago from Pune railway station.
Wankhede, originally from Yawatmal in Vidarbha, was a sepoy in the army and would travel on assignments.
The police said he had been stealing from people on trains for the past six months and had now surrendered all the booty with him after his arrest.
Wankhede also confessed to six incidents where he had stolen ornaments from women while they were asleep in the train.
His accomplice Chavan is still absconding. PSI Shantilal More along with Police Constables Sarjerao Shinde, Satish Dhole, Prashant Doiphode, Hanumant Thombare and Nishikant Raut arrested Wankhede after receiving a tip-off.u00a0
A sketch prepared with the description given by a 75-year-old woman, Rajeshwari Ernakulam, who was relieved of heru00a0 ornaments while travelling from Navi Mumbai, helped in nabbing Wankhede. PI Mahendra Rokade, the investigating officer, said, "We hope women passengers will come forward and help us in identifying Wankhede."
