Credibility in probe into scribe death must be ensured: Ram Naik

Allahabad: Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik today said "credibility" must be ensured while probing the case of journalist Jagendra Singh's death, in which a state cabinet minister and five others have been booked for murder.

"Let a probe decide whether it was a suicide or a murder. The fact remains that a person has died of burn injuries. The most important thing is not which agency investigates the case.

The most important thing is credibility of the investigation and that must be ensured", Naik said. The Governor was replying to queries on the demands for a CBI inquiry into the death of the scribe and reports in some sections of the media claiming that Jagendra had put himself on fire to implicate UP Cabinet Minister Ram Murti Verma.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of 'UP Agricultural Science Congress' organised by Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences in Naini, about 20 km from here. Dismissing the controversy regarding International Day of Yoga celebrations, Naik termed it as "differences arising out of petty mindsets".

Earlier in the day, the Governor was handed over a memorandum by a group of competitive examination aspirants demanding the removal of UP Public Service Commission Chairman Anil Yadav whom they accused of "corruption" and "favouring a particular community". "I had spoken to the Chief Minister on this issue earlier. Upon your request, I would have a word with him again," Naik told them.
