People walk under heavy rain on the seafront of Puducherry as Cyclone Thane unleashes its fury yesterday.

Packing winds of up to 140 kmph, the severe cyclonic storm that hit Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory last morning killed 33 people and left a trail of destruction of crops and property, said officials. The deaths were caused by electrocution, falling of trees or roofs and walls during the day.
Cuddalore hit hard
The toll in TN was 26, with Cuddalore district reporting the most deaths (21). The remaining dead in TN were from Villupuram (2), Tiruvallur (2) and Chennai (1).
