The movie is about true achievement. It motivates you to believe that nothing is impossible. It is based on the true story of racer Burt Munro who passed away in 1978.
For 25 years, Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins) from Invercargill, New Zealand, has been working on his motorcycle, a 1920 Indian, to increase its speed. This veteran wants to fulfill his wish of riding his motorcycle to the salt flats of Bonneville, Utah and test his bike's power to break the speed record.u00a0
Heart disease poses a threat, but he refuses to given in. He heads out with his vintage bike, mortgages his house and takes a boat to Los Angeles, buys an old car, builds a makeshift trailer, gets the Indian through customs, and heads for Utah. This simple man meets the hardhearted reckless people of the city. But he remains unaffected and changes the attitudes of those around him by his natural friendliness and approach towards life.u00a0
When he reaches Utah, people are skeptical about the condition of his bike and fear for his health, considering his age. There are many who oppose him taking part in the race. They finally agree, stunned by his undying enthusiasm and energy. He is allowed to make a timed run. In the 8th mile, he achieves over 200mph then falls with the bike and skids to a stop. His leg is burned by the exhaust, but the old man succeeds nonetheless.u00a0
Director Roger Donaldson had been working on this movie for over 20 years before he started filming it. Many of the props used for filming were actually owned by Burt Munro, including all the exploded pistons and the piston mould that Hopkins uses for a scene in the film. These are on display at the Southland museum and art gallery.u00a0 Anthony Hopkins has portrayed the character of Burt to perfection. The movie keeps you on the edge, hoping all the while and wishing Burt makes it to Utah and ends the race breaking the record. Truly inspirational, this is one movie you should not miss watching, especially if you are a motorcycle fan.
