Two days after the state accepted the demands of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) onu00a0security for government-run hospitals, the dean of Sassoon General Hospital said he is yet to be in the know of things.
Principle among the demands was the formation of a security committee at every hospital's individual level that would review measures needed for enhancing security of hospital and protecting doctors from attacks. Apart from this, MARD has demanded CCTV cameras, a police chowky on the premises with armed guards round-the-clock, and monthly review of shortage of medicines and surgical instruments.
Dr Ajay Chandanwale, dean of Sassoon hospital, said he was yet to receive any instructions from the Directorate of Medical Education and Research."Anyway, most of their demands are not relevant to all hospitals. At Sassoon, we have a police chowky on the premises with armed policemen at all hours. Besides, we have adequate security staff and proposal to install CCTV cameras and other security equipment has been made to state government and is pending authorisation for a long time," said the dean.
He said the resident doctors were largely satisfied with the security arrangements at the hospital. Asked about constituting the security committee, he said he could not comment until he received official instructions. There was also talk that since the city doctors stayed out of the strike, they might be sidelined. Dr Prakash Nalawade, state president of MARD, clarified that there was no such move in the offing.
