While his colleagues were at an all-time high alert, the in-charge of Delhi Police's elite commando unit - SWAT - was being so careless that he was going around the city with his gun hanging over his bike wrapped in a polythene.

It would also be interesting for Mr Dadwal to note that BD Meena, who is at the helm of a 30-member Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team lost his gun in the most careless manner, at the traffic signal near Dyal Singh College which is a stone's throw away from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

In his complaint at the Lodhi Road Police Station, Meena said that the incident occurred on October 12 and somebody snatched the polythene bag containing his gun. The Delhi police for special anti-terrorist operations raised the SWAT team after 26/11 terrorist attacks on Mumbai.

"I was carrying the gun packed in a polythene and had tied it on the handle at the rear side of the motorcycle. I don't know where it fell," Meena said in his complaint to the police.

However, if sources are to be believed, Meena was carrying the weapon in his holster and an unidentified person snatched it away when he was waiting for signal to turn green at Dyal Singh College.u00a0

It was a 9mm pistol, one of the best available to the security forces, which is a user-friendly and light weapon. DCP, south district, HGS Dhaliwal confirmed the incident and said that a case of theft was registered at the Lodhi Colony police station. He added that the cop also lost a wireless set. Meena is a 2005 batch sub-inspector and has been heading the SWAT team for the past several months.

What's SWAT?

The Delhi Police raised the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team to effectively tackle 26/11-like terrorist and hostage crisis. Thirty-five young men recruited for the team underwent rigorous training at its training college in Delhi.
These personnel, who function under the elite Special Cell, are equipped with state-of-the-art weapons like assault rifles, sub-machine guns, shotguns, riot control agents and high-powered rifles.
They are expected to have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, entry tools, advanced night vision cameras and motion detectors for covertly determining the positions of hostages or hostage takers inside an enclosed structure.
SWAT also received training from NSG --- National Security Guard.u00a0 Recently, the Special Cell purchased three bulletproof vehicles for its SWAT team.

The official weapon of a Delhi Police constable was stolen from inside the Vasant Vihar police station premises a few days ago.
Police sources said that a constable, identified as Naval, who is posted at the Vasant Vihar police station for the past about three years, was resting in the barrack room of the Vasant Vihar police station when he received a call and went to attend one of the court proceedings. However, he forgot his 9 mm pistol on his bed. When he returned he found the gun missing. A case of theft was lodged at the Vasant Vihar police station against unknown people.
