Did any member of the family ever want to write a biography on Smita Patil?
No one did, nor wants to. Some of this is going to change though as there are things on the anvil that will be officially announced soon.
Are there any other documentaries made/being made on Smita's life?
Strange that you would ask all these questions, as I am actually working on one as of this week! It was decided this past weekend while I was in Goa with some colleagues and here you are asking me the very same question. It's uncanny. I'm getting goose bumps.
As Smita's family, how do you think India remembers her even today?
They may remember her for her path breaking roles, her unconventional beauty, her troubled personal life or her sudden tragic death. I believe that most people and especially women remember her emotionally, because even today many see their lives reflected in her characters and person. She was vulnerable and caught between the tides and pulls of convention and freedom.
Were there portions of her biography/documentary that you found particularly moving?
The parts that reflected her dilemmas and that she never got a chance to get to know or enjoy the child she so desperately wanted and for which she made self-destructive compromises.
Smita was only 31 when she died. How would you say she lived her life?
She let her heart lead her all the way. She lived her life very bravely. Even in the face of utmost odds, she stood her ground and stuck by the choices she had made. Few do.
