Dr Shivaji Sanap, who was arrested on June 2, for his alleged involvement in running abortion and sex determination racket, was produced in the Beed Sessions Court yesterday and remanded in police custody till June 11.
Co-accused Dr Shrihari Lahane, Sanap’s father-in-law, who was arrested on Wednesday, was admitted to Beed Civil Hospital after he complained of chest pain and high blood pressure.u00a0

“He was brought to the hospital soon after his arrest with high BP. After treatment, he was discharged. Today (Thursday) morning he was brought in again and this time we admitted him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He is currently suffering from ischemic heart disorder, that is reduced blood supply to the heart and hypertension,” said Dr R H Giri, resident medical officer, Beed Civil Hospital.
“It is our duty to treat any person, who is admitted to our hospital as a patient, even if he’s a criminal. He needs better medical facilities and therefore we had referred him to the Medical College of Aurangabad, which is the nearest. However, he is not willing to go and is asking for a private cardiologist,” said Beed Civil Surgeon Dr Gauri Rathod .
A police official said Dr Lahane was insisting on a private cardiologist as he did not have faith in the medical treatment available at the civil hospital. On Saturday, in a letter to Superintendent of Police Dattatrya Mandlik, Dr Rathod alleged she perceived Dr Lahane as a potential threat to her life as she was a part of the raiding team and had sought police protection since then.
“No private cardiologist will be allowed,” Mandlik said. “Only the panel of three doctors appointed will take charge of Lahane. If necessary, only a private doctor will accompany him while shifting him to the Medical College of Aurangabad for further treatment.”
Two more doctors from Beed were booked under the Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act yesterday. They were charged for not filling details in form ‘F’ and were issued show-cause notices. Dr Sanjay Raghunath Veer, proprietor of Veer Hospital, and Dr Sunil Mastud of Sagar Stree Hospital will be presented in the court on August 8 and August 11 respectively.
