Three highway accidents near the city in three days have sent alarm bells ringing, but the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is showing a downward trend in mishaps over the last few years. The constant checks on speeding by the highway police seem to be showing results.
After enforcement powers were restored to the highway police last year, 4,338 errant drivers were booked in the past eight months and Rs 8.67 lakh collected in fines.
"Our Expressway drive was launched on August 15 and is still on," said Superintendent of Police Dr Jay Jadhav.
There were 165 deaths in 2008 on the 96-km Expressway, and 104 fatalities in 2009. The number of accidents fell from 644 to 461.
"It is observed that on the Expressway 95 per cent of accidents are due to speeding," Dr Jadhav said, adding that the highway police had increased patrolling and speed guns were widely used.
