Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr or the festival of breaking the fast. Eid marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-dusk fasting. Eid is the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the lunar Islamic calendar.

The festival begins with Muslims taking a bath to clean themselves and wear their best attire, after which they head to mosques or open spaces called Eidgahs to offer mandatory prayers. It is also required that Muslims pay the Sadaqa-al, which is a charitable donation before offering prayers.
It is followed by a Khutba or sermon where the imams or prayers leaders thank the Almighty for perseverance to observe fasting during Ramadan.
Then people greet each other and chant Eid Takbirs aloud. People also visit the homes of friends and relatives to offer Eid greetings.
Many politicians like Rahul Gandhi have taken to Twitter to send their wishes.
Shawwal moon sighted. Eid tomorrow. #Eid mubarak to all of you. Have a blessed Eid.
