Tezpur (Assam): A herd of wild elephants today created havoc damaging houses and destroying standing crops in Assam's Sonitpur district.

The herd, comprising about 40 jumbos and calves, emerged from the neighbouring Burain forest in Helem revenue circle under Gohpur sub-division of the district in search of food last night, Sonitpur Divisional Forest Officer Suvashis Das told PTI.

The herd today marched towards the paddy fields damaging houses and destroying the standing crop in the area. The forest employees are camping in the area and efforts are being made to push back the herd of elephants to the forest, Das added.

The wild elephants come out of the forest usually around this time of the year in search of food causing immense loss of crops and property to the villagers. They come regularly from the southern part of Kaziranga National Park's sixth addition which is nearest to the division with forest guards pushing them back, Das said.
