Six more children have died due to Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, taking the toll in the viral fever in eastern Uttar Pradesh districts to 257.

The fresh deaths took place in Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kushinagar and Mahrajganj districts on Tuesday, health officials said on Wednesday.

As many as 27 people suffering from the fever have been admitted to the BRD Medical College Hospital, Additional Director (health) LP Rawat said.

The deadly Japanese Encephalitis fever is caused by a virus found in pigs and wild and transferred to humans by mosquito bite. It affects the brain and causes high fever and respiratory distress.
