Japan is known for its unique Teriyaki cooking style, Belgium for its fries or fritters served with a generous dollop of cheese, and Mexico for its piquant jalape ufffdos. But who would have thought that rolling all these flavours into patties, sandwiching it between a soft bun and serving each one with that country's beer would be such a hit recipe?
Welcome to Colaba restobar Woodside Inn's fourth annual beer and burger festival that lets you travel to 10 countries, sample a local beer ofu00a0 each -- from Germany's Erdinger wheat beer to USA's Brooklyn lager -- while chomping succulent beef burgers, minced and seasoned to perfection.
The special 15-day menu is divided into combos -- burger or two from each country (India, Italy, Mexico, Belgium, Holland, USA, UK, Japan, Ireland and Germany) along with a beer from that region. You can either opt for a combo or go for an individual burger, skipping the beer.
What's interesting about the menu is that each recipe is refreshingly different and unlike anything you would have sampled at fast-food chains or upmarket restaurants.
"A burger is a very casual food item; every country has its own interpretation. We too have created our own version of each burger after intense research -- using books, talking to well-travelled friends and of course, browsing the Internet on each country's popular flavours," says Pankil Shah, partner, Woodside Inn.
Belgium is known for its fritters served with cheese, so you'll find a Four Cheese Potato burger under 'Belgium'.
For 'Holland', the team learnt that caper mayonnaise and dill seasoning are popular flavours, so they've put together a Dill Fish Fillet Burger with Caper Mayonnaise.
There are a total of 15 burgers, of which five are vegetarian (we think that's a fair number) and six include beef burgers (they are the biggest hit every year, says Shah).
The final verdict on the table was that the beef in most of the burgers was of superior quality, the mince was well seasoned, and cooked just right. Meat lovers must try the Beef Burger with Grilled Ham and Melted Gouda (Holland) or the American Whopper (that comes with a double beef patty), the Jalape ufffdo Beef Burger with Cheese (Mexico) and the Teriyaki Chicken Burger (Japan). The vegetarians will love the Refried Beans and Avocado Burger with Salsa Rosso from Mexico -- well-balanced, with each bite bursting with a variety of flavours.
