Home Minister, top cop blunder their way in front of the media all in one day

Shankara Mahadeva Bidri, the city police commissioner, was prompt enough to read out the press notes released by the police PRO for the press and polite enough to reply the queries of the scribes, who were skeptical about the veracity of the news, as it was a sort of d ufffdj vu for them with a faint memory of a similar case in the past.

Shankara Mahadeva Bidri, the city police commissioner committed a faux pas by reading out the press note of a five-month-old news.

When asked whether it was a fresh case, a confidently beaming commissioner said, "The accused was arrested today. Our men have done a commendable job, and this is official."

The reporters, who rushed to the concerned police station, came to know that Bidri had committed a faux pas, when the police inspector confirmed it was old news.

The case

On March 18, Byappana Halli police had arrested Narayanappa (32) for killing his three kids at the behest of a tarot card reader, who had advised him the act would fetch him wealth.u00a0

A complaint lodged by his wife, had prompted the police to arrest Narayanappa. The media had extensively covered the case.

How it happened?

As routine procedure followed, a writer in Byappana Halli police station sent out press notes about the day's developments to the office of the Halasur sub-division assistant police commissioner of police (ACP), on Tuesday, and the old press note was mixed with the lot.

The ACP's office promptly forwarded it to the PRO, who released the press notes to the media before making copies for the police commissioner.

While the commissioner was not available for comment, the PRO V Ramiah put blame on the ACP office.

"They should have verified the press notes before sending it to us. We were confident about them and released them to the media.

Anyway, I own up the responsibility and apologise to the media," he said, while requesting not to publish the news.

GB Manjunath, ACP of Halasur sub-division, washed off his hands saying he was on leave, while K V Srinivas, police inspector of Byappana Halli police station, said, "It is our fault and we should have seen it before sending. I will be careful in the future."

ET TU, Home Minister?

Home Minister VS Acharya was not too far behind when the police commissioner goofed up the media briefing.

While updating a TV channel about People's Democratic Party Chairman Abdul Naseer Madani, who is in the police custody in elation with Bangalore serial bomb blast, Achaya said, "We are likely to ask for an extension for Madani's custody.

There is an indirect involvement in blast outside Chinnaswamy stadium blast. A clearer picture will emerge in a couple of days.

More arrests are likely and inquiry may reveal more names."

News agencies and channels carried the news before the home minister retracted to say, "The twin blasts outside the stadium ahead of the IPL game were at the behest of the betting lobby.

I'm misquoted and at this point of time there is nothing to show that the PDP leader was involved in the blasts."
