Feel like ditching the boss and working for the earth?

The 'Green Jobs India Fair' might just help

A few years back, economies across the world breathed on information technology, aviation, real estate, automobile, banking and energy. Now's theu00a0 turn of the environment, which is unleashing fresh new employment opportunities. As the world heads towards sustainable development, conservation-related jobs promise to make the world 'greener' for you, too.u00a0 To focus on this emerging job market, the Climate Project India and Sierra Club's Green Livelihoods Centre is organising 'Green Jobs India Fair'.

What are green jobs?
If you go by common understanding, green jobs relate to renewable energy, biodiversity preservation, waste management, water conservation and treatment, and carbon management make it to this category. However, the domain actually extends to the change in employment patterns in favour of greener, cleaner and more sustainable employment. Anything and everything that contributes to enhance the sustainability, preservation and restoration of environmental quality falls under the umbrella of habitat employment profiles.u00a0 If you go by experts, they believe that majority of such jobs in the country will be generated in the field of managing natural resources such as water and land, and not just from deploying renewable energy like wind and solar power.

Each of the 600,000 villages in the country would require a water and waste manager, which means 1.2 crore jobs.

Sustainable step
The fair will flow information about the sector, help connect employers with students, policy makers and community members, discuss the practicality of working in the sector, convince educationists and policy makers to recognise the potential of this sector, and provide suitable support to develop such work profiles. A number of guest speakers who have contributed to the development of the emerging green economy will be here to facilitate deeper understanding of the sector. Gaurav Gupta, director, The Climate Project India says, "Sustainability is no longer a niche concern. Businesses are becoming aware that green credentials are an integral part of achieving strategic business objectives and ensuring a competitive advantage in the future. Go get a green office life.
