Few takers for training sessions despite high unemployment

Of 63,382 candidates selected to undergo special training as part of state govt's employment promotion programme, only 20,909 aspirants complete sessions

Though state employment and self-employment offices have an alarmingly high number of unemployed job aspirants listed with them — over 25 lakh up to May 2012 — their offer of special training sessions found a relatively limited number of takers.

Figures with the state government reveal that out of 63,382 candidates selected by the employment offices to undergo special training to facilitate employment, a mere 20,909 candidates completed the training programme.

The state government offers training at private industries and government enterprises as a part of an employment promotion programme (EPP) along with a stipend of Rs 300 to 1,000.

According to figures with the state government, state employment offices had 28.75 lakh individuals registered with them in 2009, 26.82 lakh in 2010, 25.96 lakh in 2011 and 25.32 lakh up to May this year.

Within five months — between January and May this year — approximately two lakh unemployed individuals registered themselves with the state offices.

From 2009-10 till May this year, 6.5 lakh individuals were recommended for training, out of which 63,382 were selected and 20,909 completed the programme. But, just 3,631 were absorbed in private and government sectors.

Meanwhile, in a written reply to the legislative council, Minister for Employment and Self-Employment Narayan Rane said yesterday that out of 25.32 lakh unemployed, only 6.23 lakh were absorbed in jobs at various firms.

The state government also organises employment melas for the benefit of the unemployed. From 2009-10 to May this year, just 499 melas were organised wherein 2.11 lakh job seekers were present. However, a mere 51,562 candidates were selected for employment against 2.24 lakh jobs available for them.u00a0
